Woodthorpe Primary School

Welcome toWoodthorpe Primary School

Year 1

Year 1's end of year treat this year was a huge water fight! We used super soakers, water bombs and cups to make sure all of the teachers and our friends got wet. What a fantastic way to finish our year.

Year 1 - Hummingbird - Spinning Art

As part of ART day, Hummingbird class created some spinning art based on artwork from Damien Hirst. We had so much fun squirting the paint onto our circular canvas and then we spun the paper on a stick as fast as we could to spread and mix the paint. The results were fantastic, and everyone had a completely different result!

Year 1 - Kingfisher - Wedding

In RE we celebrated the wedding of Arya and Ewan. We decided to have an outdoor wedding, and sung songs and threw confetti at the new bride and groom. After the ceremony, we had a mini after party, where we played party game and looked through photos of our special day.

Year 1 - Hummingbird - Bean Babies

In our design and technology lesson, we planted our dwarf bean seed babies in a plastic cup. We made sure to give them everything they need to grow; water, warmth and sunlight. We will be checking and watering them everyday until they are ready to be planted in the Woodthorpe Garden!

Year 1 - Hummingbird - Cricket Taster

We thoroughly enjoyed our exciting cricket taster session! We played some fantastic games and improved our throwing and catching by going up difficulty levels. Some of us even managed to get to level 10 which meant throwing the ball in the air, touching your head, shoulder knees and toes, and then catching the ball! “I actually managed to complete level 9 and 10!” - Jacob

Year 1 - Hummingbird - Survival Island

Hummingbird class have become the ultimate island survival experts! We read "Grandad's Island" then discussed and learned different ways to survive on an island. We started by jumping off our boats and swimming to land. "Land ahoy" - Harry. Then, we started to create fires by rubbing sticks and hunt fish with a spear. Some of us even acted as the "cheekiest monkeys" from the story!

To celebrate Holi Year 1 made Rangoli patterns in the small world and creative area. We used numicon the help us create our designs.

Year 1 - Hummingbird - Astronaut Crash Landing

In maths today, a famous British astronaut crash landed in Woodthorpe! Her rocket blew up and clocks were spread all across the playground. We had to find all the clocks, tell the times and then write down the code to find out who the astronaut was. We worked out the code… it was Helen Sharman!

Year 1 - Kingfisher - Mystery Astronaut

The Mystery Astronaut- In Maths today, we had to read the various clock times to solve who was our mystery astronaut. We used our code cracking skills to work out that it was the famous Astronaut Helen Sharman! We were delighted to have finally cracked the code and read all of the clocks around our playground.  Great work detectives!

Year 1 - Kingfisher - Minibeasts

We launched our topic of Minibeasts off by having our own caterpillars! We named our caterpillars just in case any of them decided to wriggle away. We can't wait to see them transform into butterflies. During our visit to the forest, we couldn't believe our eyes when we found a family of ladybugs! We took them back to our classroom and kept them in a special container so that we could look after them every day.

Year 1 - Kingfisher - Money Shop

We have been learning how to add money together this week and what a better way to learn than to have our very own farm shop. We had to buy different vegetables from our shop and use coins to help us add up the different vegetables.  Throughout the week, we had special offers and had to persuade people to come to our shop to buy our special daily deals.

Year 1 - Hummingbird - Follow the map

We found a map similar to the one found in the story ‘What the ladybird heard’ so we followed it using compass directions and it led us to the forest! We were expecting to find a prize cow but instead we found a family of ladybirds!

Year 1 - Home Learning

Year 1 have been learning from home over the past few days. We have been busy making various crafts such as toilet roll snowmen, decorations, and cards, alongside our English and Maths work. We were blown away by the photographs and videos that we have received, and here are just a few examples of our amazing achievements. Well done Year 1!

Year 1 - Kingfisher - Geography Challenge

As part of our Geography challenge we had to make our own summer or winter clothing using bin liners and recycled materials. What a creative class!
Year 1 were visited by a mystery Penguin called Plop who brought them some ice eggs. We had to use salt, straws, a hairdryer and our hands to try and melt Plop's eggs. Finally, we used the magnifying glasses to see the cracks that we had created in Plop's eggs. "That is amazing look at the egg" Evangelina.
In English Year 1, went to the forest and found a mystery box. We had to guess using some clues where the box had come from, and who might have left it at Woodthorpe. Using our special investigation glasses, we discovered that a camera and photos from the Artic had been left inside the box. We then used the special camera to take pictures of our forest, ready for the box to be returned back to the Artic last night.

Year 1 - Hummingbird - Mystery Object

As part of our English, we went in search for a mystery object in the forest. We found a strange and mysterious box filled with interesting things. We wonder who left it there and where did it come from?
