Year 3

Year 3 - Woodpecker - Soil Layers

In science we got chance to adventure down to the forest to investigate into what layers there are within soil! We found all sorts of hidden insects, plants and different textures of soil!

Year 3 - Magpie - Stop Frame Animation

As part of our computing topic, we delved into the world of stop frame animation! We first discussed stop frame animation and learnt how a sequence of photographs can form a short, moving clip. We thought about the different sequences of movement and how to make the clip run as smoothly as possible. We then created our own animations using a stop frame animation programme. We explored using props and adding sound!

Year 3 - Woodpecker - RE Pentecost

In RE this week we looked at the christian festival: 'Pentecost'. We then made some beautiful stained glass windows using the fire and dove symbol that is used to represent this festival. They turned out brilliantly and looked lovely hanging in our class windows!

Year 3 - Magpie - Sheldon Visits Magpie Class

Magpie class were so lucky to receive a visit from Scarlett Cann's tortoise, Sheldon. Sheldon was absolutely beautiful! Scarlett was exceptional whilst delivering a presentation all about Sheldon. We then got to take it in turns to hold him and gently stroke his shell. We were very interested to learn that Sheldon likes to nibble on fish bones for calcium! Sheldon was so well behaved and is welcome to visit anytime!

Year 3 - Magpie - Alanna the Astronaut

We are so proud of Alanna who has designed and created her very own spacesuit! Alanna has shown such determination and resilience whilst sewing all the different sections together, she even created her very own arm and knee pads! Magpie class were so impressed by Alanna's creative skills and we would like to say a huge congratulations for all of her hard work! We are sure NASA will be in touch very soon with help to design their next space suit.

Year 3 - Magpie - Magic Mixing Maths

For our maths practical day, we created our very own watermelon lemonade. We had to use our measuring skills to accurately measure the mass and capacity of our ingredients. We had great fun, especially scooping out all of the watermelon! The drink tasted delicious!

Year 3 - Magpie - Pentecost Day

This term in RE, we are celebrating different religious festivals. We started our topic by learning about the Christian festival, 'Pentecost Day'. Pentecost Day celebrates the descent of the Holy spirit. The Holy spirit is often represented by flames so we decided to make our own stain glass windows to demonstrate the arrival of the Holy spirit.

Year 3 - Woodpecker - Watermelon Lemonade

Within our maths lessons, we have recently been learning to measure mass and capacity using a variety of units such as g, L, ml and kg. To consolidate our learning, we were able to follow a recipe to make some scrumptious watermelon lemonade. We used different types of scales to measure the ingredients out and then we finally got to taste our masterpiece. It was DELICIOUS!!

Year 3 - Magpie - Magnet Fair

To end our Magnet topic, we were set a design brief to create a game which could be played at a science fair. We decided to use our knowledge of magnets to create a game which required magnetic attraction. We created our very own magnetic fishing game! We used magnets, magnetic objects, wooden rods and string. We had lots of fun creating our games!

Year 3 - Ben Godfrey Visit

We were incredibly lucky to have met the football superstar, Ben Godfrey! We first got to ask Ben lots of questions about his football career before taking part in an exciting penalty shoot out! Luckily, a few Year 3 children managed to score a goal - what an impressive achievement! It was so wonderful listening to and watching somebody so inspiring, Year 3 felt very honoured to have had the fantastic opportunity!

Year 3 - Magpie - Pizza Party!

As part of our fractions unit in maths, we created our very own pizza shop, serving the best pizzas in town! We had to think carefully about what fraction to cut the pizza into and what fraction of the pizza needed which toppings. We then sold our pizza slices to our friends, seeing who could create the most interesting pizza. We used lots of mathematical vocabulary whilst persuading people to buy our slices!

Year 3 - Magpie - Magnet Magic!

As part of our Science Magnet topic, we were set a challenge to make a magnet move without touching it! All we were given was a second magnet! Luckily, all teams managed to move the magnet! We managed to make the magnets jump, spin and zoom around on the table! We discovered the magnets have a north and south pole and that opposite poles attract and the same poles repel!

Year 3 - Woodpecker - Connect a Fish

To celebrate our topic of magnets and all of the fantastic new things we have learnt we were able to make our very own fair game explaining how magnets work. We designed a fishing pole and made the under sea animals magnetic by using certain materials such as paper clips. We had so much fun playing each other's games and trying to get as many points as we could!

Year 3 - Magpie - Art Day

For our art day, we studied the famous sculpture artist, Barbara Hepworth. We discovered how she made her sculptures and where she took her inspiration from. We started the day by creating our own sketches of her sculptures, concentrating on the different shapes used. We then made our own sculptures using cardboard boxes and papier-mâché, taking inspiration from Barbara’s work. Once our models had dried, we painted them in an assortment of colours.

Year 3 - Magpie - Marvellous Magnets

This week in science we have discovered the power of magnets! We started the week by learning about push and pull forces. We then moved on to testing the strength of two different magnets in our own fishing game. In groups, we had to see which magnet was the strongest and would hold the most paper clips! One group managed to hold 124 paper clips on their wand magnet! Wow!
